    Awful noise and opened mouth?

    Hey everyone,

I am very new to snakes, I have my girl since 2 weeks. She is 115gr only. I feed her fuzzies 2 times a week, but soon I'll upgrade to bigger mice once a week. She is in a plastic tank, humidity 44%, temp is between 24-30. Clean water bowl, newspaper substrate. Nothing else. She is nice, active, taming down very well, tongue flickers. She eats well as well.

Today I suddenly heard a very awful noise, like gurgling or choking or farting and burping, I am not sure how it is the best to describe. I immediately opened the cage, and she was there, keeping her neck up a bit, nothing unnatural position, but just opened mouth, like if she mis-swallowed something. I fed her 3 days ago.

Few seconds later it stopped. She just looked at me like normal.

I investigated the cage, I found poo, white poo, and (imo) pee. Didn't look like puke at all to me. I'll attach some pictures, just to be sure.
Sometimes she is in weird positions, I'll also attach a picture. I am very paranoid, I've already read a lot about illnesses like IBD etc, I hope she is fine.

Is this bad? Is that the sign of an illness or incorrect feeding? Please someone experienced tell me she is ok!
    Thank you in advance,
    M.

That was a snake fart. They can be terrifying to say the least.

The white stuff is called urates. Urates are a form of pee, and are completely normal.

I will say that fuzzies are probablty too small for your snake. You want to feed a rodent that is as wide if not a little wider than the widest part of the snake

    Awful noise and opened mouth?

Is there any mucus or bubbles around her mouth?

If it was farting and such you heard it could be that. Keep an eye on her mouth though. If she holds it open a lot and you notice any bubbles a vet visit is probably in order.

I have never heard a 115g snake "go to the bathroom" but I've definitely heard the bigger ones go and it's quite the startling noise lol

Oh yeah and get your snake on to rats ASAP, ditch the mice! They're not big enough for a full grown BP and it can happen that once they've been on mice for awhile they won't want to switch over to rats, so better to do it young.

    Hey everyone,

thank you for the super quick answer!

No, there is nothing around the mouth, I also made a picture of that, I'll attach it.
But if she is just a loud toilet user, then why the opened mouth? That scared me the most: )

I have a bearded dragon, so I assumed the white poop-part is the same or something similar: ) Nice then.

Also, the breeder said she has to go up on adult mice in a few weeks, is that correct? What size should she get? A big mouse or a small rat? Is the rat better than a mouse nutrition wise, or there is no difference?

Better over-worry then loose an animal!

    Thank you a lot,
    M.

She can eat adult mice (about 15-20g) now, I promise. As for nutrition, really its a negligible difference.

They will sometimes open their mouths if it is a particularly large poo. I mean.. think about when you yourself use the toilet... sometimes it can be... intense. LOL

There are thousands of happy adult mousers out there. I raised my founding females on two adult mice a week and they grew fine.

Rats are more convenient because you only have to feed one vs multiple, but there is no detriment to the health of your animal if mice are more convenient.

My previous adult mousers switched to rats easily as adults.

If you can find some place that will sell you a 2-4 week old rat, that's your best bet. If not, adult mice for a while and then make the switch.

Maybe she needed to yawn after dropping a deuce? Or she was saying "Ahhhh!" I heard one of Coleslaws snakes fart once, my dog was there at the time too and it was all I could do to keep him from attacking the rack LOL

I would stop feeding mice all together, dont upgrade in mouse size just get a rat of about the same size..

    Hey everyone,

I am trying to find the right size, but where I live it is quite hard.
I'll aim for 20gr rats then, thank you!

    She is doing fine: )
