As for the clothespin trick, replace those with plastic ones! Wooden ones mold quite quickly, as I found out first-hand lol

Isn't it better to keep a gap between the eggs, if you can, rather than have them all touching?

I wouldn't think that would be an issue. Most times they are all stuck together in such a jumble and they hatch just fine.
