Just to correct myself: try live as a later resort. I have had balls find they like live enough to start ignoring f/t.

Also, I suggest keeping them on one type of food, rats or mice, not switching back and forth. I never feed mice as I have seen balls become picky and only want mice, which then makes it hard to get their weight up and maintained as they grow.
