The AKC does precious little to insure anything other than the superficial physical adherence to the standard.

If the AKC really cared about the soundness of the dogs that were being shown, a health check would be mandatory in order for a dog to receive it's final registration - or even be entered in a show..

That health check could encompass common hereditary ailments (HD, OFA screening, entropion, ectropion, etc.) and breed specific issues (VWD in Doberman's, Copper Toxicosis in Bedlingtons, Syringomyelia in Cavalier's) etc.

Without passing the health screening, the dog could not be shown or even registered. Any pekes, pugs or bulldogs that needed to be put on ice after doing a circuit of the ring would also be disqualified.

However, the AKC is more interested in registering as many dogs as they can rather than insuring the health of those it allows into it's registry. As it stands, watching Westminster is akin to watching a parade of freaks. Exaggerated jowls, droopy red eyes, extreme brachycephally, powdered skin folds..................it's hard to watch.

Re: Immune System Breakdown: Comparing bp morphs to purebred dogs

I'll admit to having not read the entire thread, so if someone else has stated this then you can ignore me, but the difference between a german shepherd and a siberian husky is the combination of thousands of allelic differences. Head/ears/eye shape, size, spine length, fur pattern/coloration, snout length and shape, fur density and feathering, demeanor, etcetera etcetera, all these traits are controlled by half a hundred different genes EACH. If you take a GSD on a genetic level and change things around to make a siberian husky you would have to manipulate thousands of sequences. The difference between a normal ball python and a pastel from one clutch is controlled by only a couple genes at most, making a normal appear pastel would only require manipulation of one sequence.

There is the potential for that sequence controlling scale coloration/pattern to also control a part of immune function, but there's no way for it to impact immune function on the kind of massive scale you see when talking about the difference between two dog breeds. If a linebred collection of a particular morph all displays weakened immune function, it's still possible to separate the problem within a couple generations, which is not as simple using a breed of dog.

I told you how to deal with your phimosis over PM.

Is there some new issue I should be aware of?
