if its a secure lid. that is buckled on, on each side - i dont see where the problem could of arose.
also, is someone in your house NOT fond of snakes and has made this clear? although i cannot imagine that the person who doesnt like the snake doesnt just take the whole bin outside somewhere n then let your snake go instead of inside the home you live in. then again - reptiles in my experience will go towards heat and burn themselves to death easily on almost any wall in any home. this unfortunately might be common knowledge.
but lets say no one entered, and probably another pet DID NOT do this. you either have a bad lid or did no secure the lid properly.
