BRB need your input!

Ok folks, first off I will admit I'm a complete boa newb. So, here's the question...
I just came across a BRB on CL for $50. She is supposedly ~4 years old, and over 5ft
She is freaking gorgeous...

So! I know they need a gradient of around 75-83, hides, HUMIDITY (Florida, yay, no problem here) etc.
My question is this-
Would she be alright in a 41qt tub, with a heat mat on thermostat either belly or side (whichever is best for her, please advise)
cypress mulch, sphagnum moss hides etc until we can get her a nice 4x2x2 pvc cage? This could be a month, it could be 2-3 months, it just depends on finances. The thing is, I don't want her suffering or cramped, or have her health decline. So if this isn't a decent few month option, I'll keep wracking my brain to figure out one.

Any input is welcomed, warnings, etc. She's so beautiful...I truly hope I can make this work somehow.

It is small but I think for short term you would be alright. Just remember that depending on who you order your cage from it could take several months.

I have my brb in a 4x2x15" cage and he makes good use of it. He is almost six feet. The ambient is 78-80 with a hotspot of 83-85. He also really enjoys soaking and spends alot of time in his pool. My humidity stays around 75-85% and he sheds well.

Thanks! I will keep that in mind for sure. I'm planning on picking up a cage from dragons4you at the next orlando repticon (may) assuming finances allow. Now I'll need two though, hopefully... One for the bts and one for the brb! Please please please let it still be available :pray:

I went ahead and set up the 41qt. Its temps are 83/84 hot, 76 cool and 80% humidity. Should I pick up some Sphagnum moss to make a humid hide or will the 80%+ be enough? Also, with it being in a rack, should I still use hides? (Whether humid or not) its a closed sided rack.

I use a hide and he uses it alot. If he is not soaking he is hiding. At 80% you should be good but is may like hiding under the moss. Mine will borrow in the cypress mulch. He was in a glass tank before with a thick substrate and loved the bury himself in it. Keep that in mind when you select a water bowl. With a thinner substrate he still tries to burrow but it is more just rooting around the cage now.

I agree with KMG about the cage and the hide, everything really, lol. And $50 is a whopping good deal on a nice BRB that already has some size to her!! I saw your picture (pm'd you too), and I think you should go for it!

Here's another question...
the big bad word, IBD, how long should I quarantine the new brb if we can get her? Will she ever be okay to move into the same room?

Any new BOA should be q/t'd for a minimum of 90 days. Any boa - whether its a BCI or BRB or Dumerils, etc. IBD is a threat, but it's not as prevalent as once thought. However, because of the incedious nature of the disease, longer q/t is vital.


And if there is ANY way to avoid moving her right into the same room, I would do it. Boas especially should not be q/t'd in the same room as your existing collections. Partly because if there is IBD, your boa can be a carrier and never show anything more than very subtle signs and you'd have to get to know your boa to discern anything wrong. And IBD can travel more easily then just by direct contact. And finally, if any pythons you own contracts it, they will die. It's not a matter of IF, but a matter of WHEN. And the "when" would come very fast for a python....
