Keep doing what you were doing, just replace the hot tap water after about 10 minutes

that's all i do... put my rats in hot water, after a while i will feel the stomach of the rat. If it isn't warm yet or the water has cooled i wii dump the cool water & re add hot water just before feeding. I also don't even bother using a baggie for the mouse or rat. Its straight in the water for them, I feel this also helps my snakes keep hydrated.
