    Re: Terribly sad photo essay

I saw this when it was posted on reddit the other day. The OP paid about the equivalent of $6.50 to see this show and had no idea what he was in for. It's a good reminder to be aware of these sorts of tourist traps when traveling abroad (or even domestically) and avoid giving them money. These operations stay in business because foreigners pay to see it.

Someone posted a 'counter' to it with pics of snake demonstration from a Red Cross-run facility in Thailand that keeps venomous snakes to make anti-venom. http://imgur.com/a/tnqFM

Some people just need to beat on or control others to feel superior. I understand they're trying to make a living...but it's just sad. All we can do is to NOT frequent these types of places...NOT getting my money when I travel abroad...

I would have just shot the performers for the greater good of humanity as well as nature.
Totally unacceptable. There is nothing good at all going on here- if anything, it is a disgusting, parasitic crime.

    Re: Terribly sad photo essay

Considering this is taking place in Thailand, I really doubt these guys are doing it because they enjoy it or feel like tough guys. They probably don't take their day's wages, hop into their Benz and head to the Melting Pot for a lovely dinner and a few glasses of wine. They live in a poverty ridden dump with practically zero opportunities. I'm certainly not condoning it, but some of you folks have never been to a third world country and have no idea what it's like to just survive in that environment...

    Re: Terribly sad photo essay

I think its horrible. It reminds me of rattlesnake round ups.

I've been to Burma and Thailand. It really is a complete 180 from the States. I went to a zoo where a zebra was in a concrete floored cage as small as a child's bedroom and the gator in a box of water where he only had room to turn around. The elephants there are still chained up to stay stationary.

I'm not supporting or trying to justify their actions, but I understand. Their mindset is totally different from here. For the most part, animals (especially snakes) are not equal beings and not sentient to them. They're not doing it to feel tough. They're just ignorant, don't care, and need to make a living. It's money in the pocket from the ever flowing trickle of foreigners.

My mother is from Burma. She said if you didn't bring your dogs or cats in at night, they will become someone's meal the next day. No one cares if its a beloved pet. Its a resource that can sustain a family.

That doesn't change the fact that ignorance is bad and respect is important.
