    so here's a little method you can try. Place a t-shirt you've worn in there with him for a few hrs, then try picking him up, if he's still feisty, simply drop a shirt of top of his head them pick him up quickly, he'll calm down once you pick him up

    Here's my method for a snake that size, say "calm down sassy pants" and proceed to pick it up.
