Grayish/reddish goop around pregnant females vagina. Never seen this before.

Okay, so a couple of days ago I noticed that one of my females was pregnant....REALLY pregnant. Massive. It looked like she had a baseball in her. She was ready to pop at any time. I go back to check on her a day later and noticed blood on the shavings...no big deal, that happens with they give birth. I left and I decided I would come back in couple hours to check again. I went back and there was nothing. I thought this was a little weird, but I kept on with my day. I just now went in there an noticed that she still hasn't given birth. I lifted up her tail and there's this grayish/redish goop all around her vagina. I've never seen this before. What could this mean? Did the babies die inside her? Is she just having a hard time getting them out? Again, I've never seen this before and I would appreciate some input.

Your female *what* is pregnant? And does she appear to be behaving normally or does she seem to be in distress?

Don't know the exact cause of it, but it happens....does she happen to be a bit older for a breeder? That's when I've noticed it happen...

Keep us updated on her. I have had this happen with bad results, but I want to see if it's the exception and not the rule.

I'm guessing your female is either a rat/mouse of some kind.

Sounds like the pups are stuck inside her. You either need to help her get them out, or take her to a vet ASAP.

Yes, yes I should have clarified the species. It's a female rat. She isn't old. She doesn't seem to be in distress. I noticed that there are now 3 little pinkies but I don't know for sure if they're hers (she's in with other females). She still has the goop around her vagina and still looks very, very pregnant.

It may just be taking her longer to have the babies. The red discharge is normal, the grey could be normal or not, impossible to tell. If she doesn't seem to be in distress (labored breathing, vocalizing), just leave her alone for a few hours. Disturbing her will stress her out.

If she starts having issues, you're going to have to either take her to a vet, or end her suffering. This is going to disturb some people, but I've had to put down an older female who was really bad off while in labor. I had other mothers with newish litters, so as soon as she was out I opened her up and was able to save 7 of the 11 babies that were in her. I work as a vet tech, so I have experience with surgeries and such, so you may not be comfortable doing that.

Nope. Not disturbing. I've done the same. Many lab animals have to be born the same way.

I have also tried to save babies that way.
Ill warn anyone though, it wasn't the sight that made me woozy, but the smell. What is that smell?

Heh, gross isn't it? I think it's a combo of smells rather than one specific thing. I worked at a pharmaceutical lab as a temp, and part of the job was doing necropsies on mice and rats and sending off samples of certain bits to be tested. Those rats didn't have the same smell as the prego, but there were certain....notes of the odor that were the same. I'd say on the prego ones, it's a combination of feces, blood, and amniotic fluid.
