There is a guy on another forum that uses those little blue glass rocks that you put in fish tanks as a "medium". You put 2 inches of rock, then one inch of water. Then put the eggs right on top of the rocks. Kinda like an egg crate. And you can re-use the rocks. I think that is what I am going to try my first year to breed.

wow this was a great poll I and replies I really am liking the light diffuser over the vermiculate. Here is the question to that do I still add only enough water so it clumps and don't drip or can I add more since no eggs will touch the substrate or water? Thus I can put a 1/4 hole in front and back and never need to air it out or worry about humidity issues?

Light diffuser here. I had really bad luck with putting the eggs on hatchrite, and no issues at all with the diffuser. It's pretty much fool proof, don't have to worry about humidity, eggs getting too wet or dry, it's nice to have one less thing to worry about.

if you're using perlite, you can add a lot of water.
even with the substrate being very wet, I still used glad press n seal. checked eggs once a week. this lets fresh air in. and about the last two weeks, I open a tiny hole in one corner to let air in when the eggs need it the most.
