You mention he feels hard. Is he stiff when he moves? You know how a snake has very fluid movements, can he do that or is he more rigid when he moves? If it's only when you hold him I would guess it isn't too serious. However, if you can see a noticeable stiffness in his motion, a vet visit is in order.
