Bored, fiddling around with logo concepts...

So after seeing some amazing snake art from a member here, and discussing logo's etc...I thought it was time to start on some logo concepts. This shall be my testing ground for logo concepts while we go through this. Feel free to drop your opinion, it's very much welcomed. Even if it's to tell me it sucks and to burn it, I'll be ok...probably.

Anywho! I really like simple logo's. So, that's going to be my first stepping stone. Also, I would like a rose to be in it, as our name will be "Wild Rose Exotics" so...yea. Here we go!

So after a good bit of opinions via facebook, I tried working with a more realistic logo rather than simplistic. Very much still a work in progress, and as always feedback is welcomed and appreciated.

I like the first one you showed.

I like the simplistic one better personally--The thing to keep in mind with logos is that you will need to use it big, but also it needs to be small (especially for business cards) and something simple will be MUCH more readable. Also, if you have something simple, its easier to do a black and white version that still looks great at a small size. I really like the stylized one you did, and I think it'd be way more versatile. The simpler the better!

Thank you. This was my exact thought process / reasoning for wanting a simple logo. It just seems like everyone's response was use a real rose/needs more detail/ etc. I wanted a simple, to the point logo that could be scaled easily etc.

    Urrgg this is frustrating lol

You don't need more detail necessarily on the first one (I like!) as much as definition. Making the petals of the rose more variegated and petal shaped will help out with the realistic vibe people are asking for. I pulled up a picture of a rose on google images here, and notice how the petals have that wavy edge to them and the blank/black spaces where the petals have a drop down to the middle (rather than a continuous succession of petals filling every space). I don't know if you're drawing it yourself or asking someone else to, but looking closely at several pictures of the subject and practicing can usually get that "simple but clear" look.

Logos always make me think of sumi painting in that you're using less detail to create a clear, bold image. If you like the concept then just keep drafting it. Touch up the snake silhouette by taking the outline of one of your BPs (or someone else's) wrapped around something round and BAM! Awesome professional looking logo.

Just some thoughts, that comes across as pretty direct. but really all you're doing is looking for an image you want to associate yourself/your business with. I like the concepts so far! And am still struggling with my own brain storms on how I want my own business "face" to eventually look like.

Thanks! Now that I reinstalled GIMP and working on brushing up on it, I've got a few ideas to try out. I'm doing this myself right now, as I don't currently have the funds for a professional logo set.

I'll update later this evening after we get home and I have more time to play

Thank you all so much, the back and forth / brainstorming helps in a huge way!

A good rule of thumb for a logo is, when you are designing it, shrink it down to 1"x1". Thats a pretty common size for a logo, and a lot of people create them at a large size, then when they get scaled down that far they lose a ton of definition and suddenly start to look really cluttered. It'll help to refine your design to consider what it'd look like if it were that small, and you'll start to see what kinds of things should be defined, or simplified, etc.

Ok, back to my simple roots Let's see what y'all think of this one. I'm still not 100% on word placement, or if I'll even use words in it at all (perhaps both, just logo for some things, logo with words for others)
