Dumb newb ???
Sorry if this is really stupid to ask. I've been reading a lot and everyone says you need a thermostat and thermometer. I understand the difference but don't understand how you use a thermostat in conjunction with a uth. Does a uth not have a built in thermostat, do they just have high and low? It's confusing to me sorry.

Uth only have 1 setting and can get up to around 115 degrees. Without a tstat you could start a fire.

The uth is what is actually doing the heating
The thermometer will tell you what the temp is
The thermostat is what regulates the temp. Ie you want the temp at 80? Set the thermostat at 80 and it will be.

Heat mat temps are controlled by the thermostat. Otherwise heat mat is on full blast, no control over temps, ie. How hot it gets.
Thermometer reads what your temps are, not controls them.

So the thermostat will turn the uth on and off as it regulates the set temp? On a new tank I would place the thermostat between the tank and the uth or does the thermostat go inside the tank under the substrate?
Do all uth's have a location to plug in the thermostat?
thanks for the help guys

Whatever you do do not put the uth in the tank. Always outside, wouldn't want to burn your buddy
There are a lot of different thermostats out there. But generally the thermostat will have a probe, me personally have my probe directly on my heat tape outside of the tubs.

I have my thermostat probe on the outside of the tank in between the UTH and the bottom of the tank. Since the probe doesn't allow all of the UTH to stick to the bottom of the tank, I also put some strong tape around the UTH to help keep it in place. Then all you do is plug your UTH into the thermostat, plug the thermostat into the wall or other electrical socket, set your temps, and you're good to go!
