    my neighbors

i have a elderly neighbor 2 houses down... she had a stroke before she moved here...she has no family accept the man that lives with her...he isnt as old as her he is maybe in his 50s shes more like 70..but when she first moved here i guess he was in the hospital..and she asked me for food and a little help to make her something to eat..and i did...and she also asked for dog food..she had 2 dogs at the time time...and i gave her food for them...she gave me this hole story about how her family isnt here...and she has no help and she cant get help from the government...and she had no electricity so it was extremly hot in her house...its a crappy little 1 bedroom house...that use to be used as a druggy hang out before she moved there...but i fell for it...and i gave her a ride...and i gave her food..and i got my bfs mother to help her out by getting a fan from church for her...and we got some donations for food...than about a week later this man appears at her house...and he tells me a compltely different story about how this is his wife...and they moved from the other place cause the landlord said this was a better house..and blah blah blah..and than asked me if i had pills i wantted to sale..this realy ticked me off so i left..and i startted askin the other neighbors about if they had been helping her out...turns out she hit all of us up for dog food..rides..and food for herself and this guy...one of them even told me they gave him a ride to the grocery store so he could get food for them and he walked out with beer instead....so i dont help her anymore...and i try not to talk to her...or him..but i feel so bad..she walks with a limp you can obviously tell she has problems walking...and she walks every were our grocery store is 2 miles away and our bread store is like 4 miles away and i see her walkin there all the time...and this guy is always getting rides every were...its ridiculous..but i dont trust her..and i have 2 kids to worry about..we dont live in the best neighborhood..and she always ask me questions about if certain houses have people living in them and when these people work..so i feel she is up to something with him....iv herd he was a theif....oh and about 2 weeks ago i gave her some cereal..and bread...and than last week the man comes to my house and tells me he cant eat the cereal because i didnt give them any milk...the nerve of him..but am i wrong not to give her rides? like right now i just came home and they both were walking down the street about 3 miles away in the cold rain..sorry for the rant...i feel guilty...but i dont want to be a sucker and i dont like being used.. i struggle to make ends meet for my family as it is...so what little i have left to blow..i dont want to spend on someone whos not deserving of it

You're doing the right thing and I would tell you that you shouldn't feel bad. They are con artists (apparently) and prey upon people's better nature to have things given to then for nothing. If people would stop giving then things for free they might appreciate what they do have a bit more and would work a bit more for it. Nothing in this world is free, so people that choose not to work for things should go without, IMO.

No, you're not wrong. This has happened to me (and probably every other "nice" person) more that once. Even if it hadn't turned out that they were lying, you can only do so much and it sounds like you've done as much (and more) as you reasonably could. No matter what the situation, you have to draw the line somewhere.

It sounds like a pretty easy solution to me, you have you own needs to worry about. As bad as you feel you should probably distance yourself from them, I don't know what their resoning for not having any family but i looks like they have been playing every one in you complex (and probably did it that last place they were at) some people are just shady. That whole milk and cereal thing would have done it for me, sorry.

We have a saying in the Marines,"No better friend, No worse enemy"
I am all for helping those in need, family, friends, stangers. but screw me once and you better not come back, cause I aint the one. Unfortunatly sometimes once is all they are looking for.

I apologize if this seems harsh but I have met some shady people that had great stories, and until I can verify those stories I gotta error on the side of caution.

    Re: my neighbors

I agree with everyone else. They've taken advantage of you, and regardless of how they ended up where they are, that's not your problem, not to mention you've got your own family to feed, clothe, shelter, and drive around (my 2 kids alone are good for 50 to 100 miles a week on the odometer). Be polite if you can, but I'd honestly stop any free handouts/assistance asap, and avoid these people as completely as possible. They sound like bad news...

I would've lost it when the guy complained about milk. I would lose it when I find our they hit everyone else up too. I would ignore them, and move on. You work hard for you, and yours, not you and those who ask nicely but don't contribute.

Think everyone hit the nail on the head on this one. I would have helped as well, but once I learned it was a lie and they did it to everyone, not only would I stop but I'd tell my neighbors as well so there up to speed so to say.
