Getting family involved
My father had a stroke recently and prior to that he had been coming over to my house to check out the snake room. He always seemed attached to one of my adult males and asked to always hold him. After recovering he started asking for a snake of his own. For Christmas I got him all set up with "sultan" which is what he named his new buddy. My father has called me a million times asking about proper husbandry and seems to be quite addicted to world of ball pythons now. He says that it's like therapy hanging out with him. He's already talking about getting more eventually, because the rack I got him has 4 slots. So apparently a bp addiction can not just be a problem but therapeutic :p
Just thought I'd share this little story about the man who bought me my first snake decades ago at this point. I'm hoping to head him over to this forum when he gets more comfortable with this "new technology".

It has been proven that any interaction with animals while recovering is therapuetic. my mother used to work for a state mental hospital and she had a patient in there who absolutely loved it when she would bring in her mini horse.
In truth I don't think it matters what kinda animal it is as long as the person feels a connection with that animal.
And to the OP I want to say that's a beautiful story and I hope your father gets well, tell him I said welcome to your new addiction.

I'm sorry to hear about your father's stroke, however it is good to hear a POSITIVE story about interaction with snakes in spite of all the negative things that we hear in the media about them. Best of luck to your father in both his recovery and his new addiction.

The next time I'm at his house I'll get pics of him with his new little buddy. I'm just glad to still have him around and on the mend, him getting into snakes is just a bonus.
