    Moment of weakness....

Im a little embarrassed but I couldnt feed the rat I bought at the pet store to my Dum.
When I opened the box she ran up my arm and hid in the crook of my neck shaking. She is very sweet and relaxed after a bit and jumped from me to my fiance and rode on his shoulder for a while before we put her in a tank.
I have wanted to move my dum off live food for a while so I think now is the time. I used to own rats as pets and this one was just to sweet, ill be returning it tomorrow.
Anyway i am now looking for suggestions on how to switch her over to frozen thawed. Thoughts? Fair warning she is very stubborn.

If you think it's too sweet to feed then you should keep it ^_^ if you return it, it will just be a meal for some other snake instead

Agreed! Someone else won't care how sweet it is - it'll be dinner.

Have you ever offered your Dum f/t? If not, just warm it up well and be prepared to do the zombie dance - she might just surprise you and take it right away. If you've tried it before and she refused, you can save some used bedding from the live rats you've had (this one you have now will give you a good opportunity for this if you keep her at least a couple of days) and drag the f/t rat through the used bedding a few times. That might help scent it with a more "live" scent. One other thing I've found that helps is to simply lay the rat down a couple of inches in front of the snake, then use the feeding tongs to "scratch" in the bedding behind the rat - the sound and vibration can trigger a feed response and some snakes can be a little intimidated by the dancing zombie.

Good luck - let us know how it goes!

What is up with people letting rats scurry up their arms like that? If something random like that goes for my face that fast, its most likely dying. Or at the very least going flying across the room. I dont like letting my snakes near my face, but i trust them enough that i sometimes do. Cant imagine just opening a box and letting some sketchy rat scurry up my arm. I dont even like the word "scurry". Thats what rats do though, they scurry. They scurry up your arm and bite you.

Only one feeder rat has ever bit me. Sometimes i hold them for a few minutes or throw a cracker or something in the box to be nice, almost like a final meal for them. I dont hate rats, i think theyre neat. Its not like im mean to them. Well i pick up this rat, after giving it a cheeze-it that it had promptly scarfed down, and it had the nerve to bite me! Im not proud of this... but as soon as my cinni girl wrapped him up i may or may not have verbally abused him slightly. The phrase "not so tough now, big guy" was uttered i think...

Same here, I think we are all animal lovers here. But I didn't shed a tear for that littler booger becoming a meal after it bit me while I was trying to be nice lol.

Hahaha yes they can be little jerks, but the ones I used to own were like little dogs, came when I called them, slept on my tummy while I watched tv, rode on my shoulder around the house and tried to drink my beer. I like rats, they are very smart and social. And I generally have no issue feeding them, and if there dead (even if I have co2'd them myself) then it doesnt bother me. But live is just nerve racking and expensive (i cant breed them in my current home). Now mice... i really could care less.

I had a mean ol mama rat, that would charge your hands, and bite, when ever they came in the tub if she had babies. I may or may not have cheered on my meanest snake as she nailed her...
