UTH probe placement

Quick if somewhat noobish question: Am I correct in thinking that I can place the probe for a UTH directly UNDER the heating pad (under the tank), so long as I'm getting the desired temperature on the warm side? I know that's how it's done for snake racks, and I just want to find a way to keep the damn probe from moving around. I don't really like having it inside the tank.

I think that if you put the probe under the tank, you won't get an accurate temperature for the inside of the enclosure.

The ideal place for a thermostat probe is sandwiched between the bottom of the tank and the UTH. You will then used a probed thermometer to measure the temperatures inside the cage and set the thermostat accordingly.

either placement will work but you still want to use a temp gun to check actual surface temps and adjust from there

While it is true that the thermostat probe won't read an accurate representation of the inside of the cage when placed outside, it is much safer. This is why using a good thermostat along with a good probed thermometer necessary

Thanks for your help, guys. I'll try sandwiching the thermostat probe between the tank and UTH, and of course I'll use a temp gun to make sure the temp's actually where I want it.
