Definitely research anyone you're buying from. They don't have to be big name breeders but they should have a good reputation in the community. The fauna BOI, the feedback forums here, etc.. Also, never settle for the first thing you see. Always shop around and get what you really like and want.
There are tons of good and honest people who take good care of their collections. You're on the right track by joining forums. Lurk all the reptile forums, the reptile classifieds like kingsnake.com and faunaclassifieds, the Facebook reptile pages and groups, etc, etc.. It won't be long before you know all the names.
