When do you change the schedule??

I was getting ready to move my 486(? )Gram BCI to small rats and I was wondering when you start feeding them less often? She's been eating large mice faithfully every 7 days

Not sure how old she is but my understanding is to feed them one prey the width of thier body every 5-7 days for the first year then switch them to a 10-14 day schedule. I haven't seen many post the weight of a boa like they do a bp so I can't help out there.

5-7 days is too often even for a tiny baby. Boas have slower metabolism than BPs. Baby boas will do well on a 7-10 day cycle for the 1st year. At a year old, I make sure they're on a 10 day schedule. At 2 years, they go on a 14 day schedule.

I would move your BCI to a 10 day schedule first. Keep feeding her that large mouse for a few feedings, then switch to the small rats. Just make sure that what your feeding leaves only a barely noticable lump in the belly.

I'm basing her age on her gram weight. I doubt a 486gm boa is more than a year old. I think a 10 day schedule will be perfect for her.

I agree with pp mostly. If the prey is on the large side err on the side of caution and go for 2 weeks, I wait 7 days at least after the feed bump is gone. My yearling is on a 2 week cycle because his small rats are just a bit on the big side. When his feeds are too dang small I go for every 7 days.

when i used to own boas, i would get them feeding on rats of appropriate size as soon as possible. most boa owners dont go by weight for the most part. at that weight i would agree with evenstar. going to a ten day would probably be appropriate and unless it was severly under fed then its most likely under a year. also, not sure what your feeding, but if you've considered it, boas tend to do alot better on f/t than balls do imo. i have never had a boa that would not switch, ive had several balls that wouldnt make the change. if your looking for boa info, theres alot of sites out there, but i would recommend you check out clays site at www.redtailboas.com theres a lot of great people over there as well and very informative
