New pet
My roommate just got a pet dumbo rat which we all play with. I have 3 ball pythons in my room. I know to wash my hands a few times And probably even change shirts after playing with the rat before i handle the snakes. But after a while will the snakes get used to the rat smell in the appt and not think its feeding time all day? And when i bring the snakes in the living room where we play with the rat (while the rat is not there obviously), since the scent is everywhere will it react as if it was feeding time or will it just get used tothe fact that the whole place smells like a rat? Haha.

We have rats and snakes in the same room. Doesn't affect anybody.

If nothing ever changed, there would be no butterflies.

If you don't keep them in the same room normally, but bring him into the room the rat is in when you hold him it's possible he could go into feeding mode. I'm guessing he's able to smell the rat even when he's not in that room so he should be alright. I have kept my snakes and rats in the same room for years and they are perfectly fine, new snakes just take a week or two to adjust to the smell.

Re: New pet
I've kept pet rats and pet ball pythons in the same room my entire life (growing up I always had both) - in the stores as well the rats are, by necessity, in the same building/room as the snakes. While yes, to a certain extent I am sure they get accustomed to the smell, they also know as soon as a rodent is dropped into the cage with them. Smell is just one cue for a feeding response, they also get triggered by sight and heat.
I wouldn't stress too much.
