    The best thing to help him relax is to leave him alone. He might have been trying to figure out his new surroundings before being comfortable enough to go hide. Give him ~ a week to settle in.

    The most important thing is keeping the temps correct. You can buy red bulbs that don't give off daylight to keep temps up if you'd like to simulate day and night. You can try raising ambient temperatures but really, to me, as long as the UTH is the correct basking temperature I don't worry about a 'basking area'. Your bp most likely won't be out of his hide too much anyway
