I would do more research on local pet stores...It is very hard to turn a profit from a pet store...

Pet stores tend to generate most of their income through supplies and feeders. Even a $30 corn requires $60 in supplies and weekly feeding. There are some very successful pet stores that sell higher end animals, but very few do. What you need to do is find the niche in your local market. For instance, in my area there are no pet stores within 20 minutes that have feeder rats (regularly or in quantity). I buy extra when I get my live rats and resell them to local breeders/keepers.
Talk to successful reptile businesses to see what/how they do it, but dont ask locally as they won't tell you how to successfully compete with them. Once you see how some pet stores are doing it successfully then you need to research your local (or wherever you plan on opening doors) market demands, voids, competition, etc. Good luck in your endeavor.

There's not very many pet stores around me. The only ones within 25 miles are a Petco and a countrymax (pet/feed store). My store will be a place I can sell my rats and lower end snakes.

I just completed my last semester for my AAS in Management and am going for my Small Business Certificate here soon for the same thing you want to do (open an exotic pet store). There's a lot of ups and down that will come with owning your own business that you need to think about, and take into account you won't be profitable in the first year/couple years of starting up. Don't forget your Business Plan or bankers won't even talk to you about giving you a loan: includes your strategic plan, management and operation plans, marketing plan, and the financial plan and your cash flow analysis. When you start writing down your start up cost analysis you'll realize just how expensive it will be to start up; it's an eye opener. Realistically (for me) I don't see myself opening up anything in the next five years (I simply won't have enough start up money saved to be prepared for it). Also as Enigmatic said you need to do a LOT of market research in your area to see what the interest level is, find who your customers are and if they're in your area (going to a demographics consultant would be a good idea). Also you could see if there's any small business development centers in your area that will help you get started when you're ready to take the jump. Good luck with your endeavors though and if you take the business classes I hope you enjoy them

Yeah I don't plan on starting it for at least 5 years. My biggest seller will be rats. The closest place that sells feeders has small rats for $4.50 each. Baby normal bps are $95.

So are you selling rats now?
Are you breeding balls now?
I am asking these two questions be cause of your last post.
If so and your house is working for you then why change it now or later?
I plan on staying small so I dont have to move the two out of my house and keeping the overhead low allows more monies to go back into my animals.

No I dont. Just started breeding rats again and this will be my first year breeding balls. I don't like people knowing where I live. I will keep all my breeders at my house and only the lower end babies at the store.
