I also have a 20 gallon long tank and the 8.5" fixture and 75W Infrared bulb are definitely enough to heat my tank. I usually have my dimmer set to about half power in a 75 degree room and it keeps the hot side at high 80s and cool side at low 80s easily.
I take it you suspend your fixture above your tank, right?
