    Real live librarian here!

I actually made a snake book list for our website, and there were a few kid-appropriate books on there. My favorite children's book about snakes is this one - http://www.amazon.com/Verdi-Janell-C...keywords=verdi - but it's an actual children's book aimed more at the 4-6 year old category. So for a 9 year-old I'd go more with something like these:

http://www.amazon.com/Awesome-Snake-...+snake+science (perfect for a science lover, but more of a science project book)
    http://www.amazon.com/The-Encycloped...pd_sim_sbs_b_8
    http://www.amazon.com/Snake-Chris-Ma...ref=pd_sim_b_1
http://www.amazon.com/Great-Big-Book...book+of+snakes (I have this one myself - it's huge and full of photos)

I'll let you know if I think of any more!
