I plan on picking up a space heater with a built in thermostat. Are they pretty safe to leave on when I'm not home?

As long as you get one that will shut off if it goes over a certain temperature, malfunctions, or overheats what it's set at, you should be ok.

I have an electric large one in my living room made by lasko. I got it at Walmart. I have it on all day and night with no problems. I also have a smaller one in my snake room.

I have one on 24/7 in the snake room. I run it on a separate thermostat and it keeps the room right around the temp I set it for. Just be very careful where you place it so that nothing can come in contact with the hot faceplate, should be fine.

I also would suggest a second thermometer unless the unit is under powered for the room (then it can't get too hot) the cheap thermostats that are built in have quite common failures. Many use a industrial T-stat like a johnson or ranco.

I echo the Johnson or Ranco thermostat advise. Those built in thermostats are prone to failure and the safest thing to do is to have a good thermostat to shut off the heater.

x3 on the external thermostat. I use a Ranco on my Holmes oil-filled radiator, and just use the internal stat as a backup. My snake room temperature is always within 1.5 degrees of my Ranco setting.
