I suggest getting a font, color scheme, and general idea ready before presenting it to an artist.
For ideas, I suppose it depends if you want a more simple or detailed logo.

I did a logo design for someone here. They had zero ideas on how to go about the logo other than their name so it was quite difficult to come up with something.
I drew something up and the breeder did like my logo. However, they disliked the font. I asked them to suggest a few fonts that they liked and I never got a response. They just continued to ask me to change the font. I don't know what kind of font style they like and there are thousands of different types of font. I'd rather not guess blindly. Eventually, they stopped contact. Currently, I see that particular person use the flawed logo on their BP.net avatar. Moral of the story, have something in mind and keep good communication with the artist.
