Nub tail sound like it was an injury, sometimes the tip can be easily torn off when they are real small, I have even heard of this happening from a real bad shed on a very small snake. Baby snakes have real small tail tips that are easily pinched off.
Yes, snakes don't usually have much of an issue with this as I understand, but their scaly cousins such as small lizards can even lose toes due to issues with poor shedding.
