    If you are using light diffuser/egg crate you don't even have to use Perlite or Vermiculite. You can just use the crate and water. If you are worried about water splash, then you can add pretty much anything you want..... pea stone, gravel, dirt etc..
    That's correct, we use perlite to stop the water from splashing on the eggs and it does a great job.
    While those are great ideas I don't suggest dirt
