Awesome pictures, thanks for sharing! As for camera, you can take really good quality pictures with just simple, cheap point and shoot cameras. As for anything nicer than that, I have no knowledge what-so-ever.

Research the Canon 20d. Older model but still very high quality dslr. They can be found cheap, used on craigslist. Lots of lens options, new or used.

Depends on your budget you can spend tons of not too much. If you have a strong interest in taking pictures and have that technical knack that is so common among herp keepers (do you love T-stats and stuff like that) I would look at a Dslr they run around the same price as a good Point and shoot for the entry but offer flexibility of lens options that sadly is where the cost is good lens options are not cheap and you keep wanting different options. If this is not your bag a good point and shoot is likely the way to go.

All purchases you can make a list of things that matter to what you shoot (macro long zoom or maybe wide angle I can't tell you it is a personal list) and then go to a store with lots of gear (camera store usually) and compare your list against the offerings see how the feel are they too big too small too heavy do the menus make sense, this will narrow the options then research price and see if there is something you missed then decide on purchasing. There is no camera that is 'right' for everyone.

@tfpets..what would you consider a good deal for a 20d? I've seen a few for ~200 for the body only. I have barely and knowledge of cameras so what would a good option be for an all around lens be?

That's a pretty good price if the camera is in good shape.
You always want to invest in good glass (lens). Camera bodies are always updating but a goof lens will last forever.

I'm in the same boat. I want to take decent pictures, but don't want to learn all of that f-stop, bokeh, aperture, etc. stuff. The light tent and a good point and shoot seems to be doing a fair job right now, but I wouldn't brag about my pictures. I'd invest in a high end camera, but with my lack of knowledge of photography, I believe I'd be wasting my money.

Oh, and cool pictures! It is getting a little cold here for back yard herping.

There are some really good point and shoots out there. Look for one you can switch out the lens or something that will take good macro shots.
I always end up using my phone, just because I always have it on me. :/

If you like the convenience of a point and shoot but want DSLR quality, look into micro 4/3th lenses and cameras. I use a Lumix GF2 I believe.

Would you get a different lens or use the one on the camera in that link, considering it will be used almost exclusively for snake photos for ads and websites?
