If releasing a few here and there is grounds for banning ownership then all cat ownership needs to be banned and we need to begin programs the world over to eradicate Felis catus, as they are an invasive species anywhere that they exist in the wild. They wreak havoc on native ecosystems, eating small rodents and birds as well as lizards and small snakes. They don't care if a species is threatened or in need of conservation, they just eat whatever they can catch. Hell, they even kill small rodents just to play with them and don't end up eating them from time to time. At least a Burmese python in the Everglades will eat what it kills.
Why the tangent? Because your post essentially said that releasing a pet is grounds for proposing legislation to ban a certain species from being kept as a pet. It is thinking like that, among other things, that has lead to so much legislation being proposed in the recent past. At least most snakes that are kept as pets in the U.S. will die during the winter if they are released in a majority of the U.S. Cats, however, thirve in the wild in every state in the U.S. to include HI and AK.
Sorry for rambling, and I'm glad that the snake has found a good home.
