    When to upgrade Tank/Tub size

We have our BP in a tank right now (I thought it was 20 gal. but think its only 15) She's about 200g.
rather "petite" for a BP. (she was underfed and we've been working on getting her caught up)

I've heard various comments- like- they dont need much room- just proper hides, water, temps, humidity etc.
(all which have been great in our tank- so far. but im sure if we upgrade size and stay with a tank, it will
be harder to control. But we have 1 BP and its my daughters "pet"- so i can't really imagine putting it
    in a tub)

So...How long can she live in this tank size before we need to upgrade?
She still squeezes herself into her small hide from reptile basics. Last feeding she tried to drag her mouse in there with her. Of course that didn't work, and she was wearing the hide on top of her, while trying to eat. LOL She loves that thing- I think
i need to move her up to the next size in that as well- but the next one is so much bigger. not sure she
    will like it as much.

    Thanks for your opinions!

Re: When to upgrade Tank/Tub size

Charlie (about 5 feet long) was in a huge 25 gallon tank and it was a nightmare to keep his humidity up. Penny (about 3 feet long) was in a 10 gallon and it was easy, but I was about to upgrade her to give her more room and a second hideaway.

I see nothing wrong with upgrading to give her more room as long as she's happy with her hideaways and the temps and humidity stay where they should, and would recommend getting something other than an aquarium to upgrade to if you do. There's some great options out there when it comes to tanks, and even though they might get expensive, it's certainly worth it. You can try a PVC tank that has a glass front so your daughter can still see her pet any time she wants without having to put it in a tub or rack. I was going to order one from PVC Cages myself. They look pretty great, and there's several companies online like them that make similar products. And there's several places that offer a wide range of hide sizes so you can upgrade that as well.

Any PVC or Melamine custom is going to be expensive. So if you're not looking to spend at least a couple hundred bucks on an enclosure, I would consider looking into something else. Like a tub and a nice thermostat. However, if the temperatures in your house are low (75 or lower), it will be very hard to maintain ambients in a tub. The tank might be your best bet after all in that instance. And for a baby, you can start with a 10gal, with a UTH ($20ish), thermostat (Hydrofarm off Amazon $30), digital thermometer with humidity (Accurite $12 at Walmart), RBI small hides (Reptile basics ~$20 once you include shipping), and then the substrate of your choice. You may want to have a heat lamp with a black light bulb or something for increasing ambient temps when it gets cold in your house.

It is true that if you increase the size of the tank, temps and humidity are harder to control. At least until you figure it out, and then the problem will be maintaining it. Anyway, she can live in a 15 gallon tank until she is a good bit longer than her tank is. My ~800g male is still in a 20L, and will be until he gets to be maybe 1500g? Depending on his overall size. I had a big female in a 20L for quite some time too, before I upgraded her. But really, yes, proper hides and husbandry are the most important because these guys don't really move around much.

As to the hides, I'm in the same boat with my new baby mojo, Ares. He's squeezing into his small RBI hides, just barely, but the mediums are huge! (That's what my bigger male uses). So maybe someone can suggest something intermediate? I was considering getting a small, opaque container and cutting out an opening as an intermediate size. Not set on that yet though. So if anyone else can offer some feedback in that department, I would appreciate it as well.

If you live in the states, a t8 is only $150.

If you want your Bp displayed, PVC is the way to go. Holds temperatures and humidity great!

    Here's mine:

(this is not a t8, but a custom PVC enclosure I got from Greg West since I'm in Canada)

I found these little black plastic flower pots at Walmart (not sure if they carry them off season??) Very cheap- and I cut it down shorter, so my snake would feel more confined. I also "melted" the plastic around the door and edges, to make sure it wasn't sharp. Its a good size, because its just a little bigger the RBI small hide. The problem is, my snake still favors the reptile basics one

Last night she ate again, with 1/2 her body still in the small hide. Once she finished, she found this tiny crack to crawl back into the hide. Apparently she forgot that 1/2 her fat body was still in & 1/2 out. Again she lifted the hide up & wobbled it around and she managed to get her whole body curled up inside there. After all that, a couple hours later, I see she moved to the warm side to digest her food anyway. lol

ooooh, looks like they have some hides of slightly different sizes then reptile basics,
    that might work well

What's important is just the square inches of floor space.

A 32 qt tub, which most people would house a BP in up to 1500 grams or so, is 23 x 17 = 391 sq in.

Measure the tank you have and if it's not far off from that, assume you can keep your BP in there a lot longer. I believe some people house males or conservatively fed females in 20g tanks their whole life.

It sounds like you should definitely upgrade the hides now. I use the medium size hide from 200-900 grams or so.
