Thermostat probe

Hi all,
I'm going to buy a Hydrofarm digital thermostat for my UTH but not really sure where to put the probe. What confuses me is that most people put the probe outside the enclosure and above the UTH... But how you know then the real temperature where the snake is? Wouldn't be more accurate to put it inside the tub, above the substrate and inside the hiding box?

There are too many chances for failure if you put the probe inside the enclosure. It could get moved, defecated on, wet, etc. Which would give your thermostat an inaccurate reading, meaning it could keep pumping power to the UTH even though the temp is where it should be. Then you end up with a cooked snake

To set up your thermostat temps, you need to have a thermometer and or temp gun to check enclosure temps. For example, I have my hydrofarm set to 94, the glass reading under the substrate is 91, and inside hide is 89-90. Temp guns are awesome

I always set up an extra tub to mock my other tubs and don't put a snake into it. In the tub I place the probe right where the snake will get the most heat.

Probed thermometers is how you know the temp.
Dummy tubs work ok but the thermostat probe does best stuck directly to the heat tape imo.

Yes it is more accurate to place the probe inside the tub. That said there are more risks involved I would NOT recommend this method with a hydrofarm full stop they are far to inaccurate to be acceptable for this method. You also really need a fail safe (or a herpstat) for interior placement. If you wish to use this method and are willing to buy a new thermostat (herpstat 1 would be the best choice for this use) PM me and we can walk through the things that must be done to insure it is safe.

The reason is just as stated above, more accurate readings, just buy the $12 acurite thermometer at Walmart, it has a probe and tells you inside temp/humidity as well!!!!

Accurites are thermometers not thermostats and they are no more accurate that the hydrofarms.

Thanks to all. Ok, It makes sense. I'll put the thermostat probe outside the tub and get a digital thermo hygrometer and put it inside. I was doing some research and found most people prefer the acurite, it looks fine I guess. The problem is I can only get the exoterra combometer where I live, which have de hygro and thermo sensor in the same probe... what you guys think about that?
