The red shouldn't bother them at all, but I have a red heat lamp for when the temps get too low, and I find it bothers my eyes a lot. I have issues seeing proper colors for several minutes after watching Penny with her light on for a while. Maybe green? But if you want to see your snake in all it's colored glory, white might be best.

I think you missed the point of the psst.

You want to provide a proper day and night cycle. The OP is asking about lighting the cage at night. If you put a white light at night it would cause your snakes to stress. The day/night cycle can really become important if you are a breeder.

As far as your red light messing with your eyes. Does it have UV properties to it? Or is the light in a position that you are seeing directly into the bulb?

The red and blue for that matter should not effect your eyes, that's why they are used when you need to preserve your nightvision.
