    There is nothing at all wrong with wood.



    I build all my cages out of wood and acrylic. The high humidity cages, like the ones above for ball pythons, I line completely with vinyl. Otherwise, I rely solely on the latex-based paint I use for water resistance. And the vinyl makes the inside just as easy to clean as any PVC cage. You can also make it any color you want, and add a nice background as well (covered by clear vinyl of course).
    I've been using those two cages for at least 5 years now, and they are still in perfect condition. FYI that repaired crack in the acrylic door of the bottom cage happened in the truck while moving from CO to WA.
    I'm currently finishing up version 2 of those cages, with a few nice improvements, and will post pics when they're complete.

    Bottom line - make your cages out of whatever material you like best and can work well with.
