    New to the BP world

    Hey guys,

Been a troll on here for a few weeks now leading up to my first Ball Python. There is a ton of info to digest on here! Just picked up my first little guy from icandi on here saturday! Pictures to come soon, waiting on photobucket to finish uploading them. So if you guys have any suggestions on new upkeep that would be great, I have been trying to follow the stickys to a T! Only issue I have been having with him in a glass aquarium is keeping the ambient temp. up. woke up this morning with ambient at 74 degrees...yikes! but his hot side was fine...been using a 60w CHE to keep ambient up but looks like I am going to have to upgrade to the 100w. Any advice is much appreciated! hope to have his pics up soon.

    -Joe

    Here we go!

-As you can see the aquarium is still a work in progress! figuring this out bit by bit, iCandi swears that I will have a rack before long lol

Ello govnor' fancy meet you here.

    Cute little baby!

A couple suggestions. If that is tape in your enclosure I'd recommend removing it. Snakes have a way of getting themselves stuck to tape and it really is no fun to get off them.. I'm sure you can imagine why!

I see you have already insulated the back and sides of the tank, so that should help with the ambients. Switching to a smaller enclosure, like a ten gallon, might be easier to keep warm. 74 isn't the worst ambient temp, but I would shoot for the high 70's if possible. You could also increase the temp of the room.

    Where are your thermometers located?

Re: New to the BP world

yea I was planning on getting the 100w and clocking it down with a dimmer or something of the sorts to hold the temp in the right range. atleast that is what I had read on here, and it is a 10 gal aquarium, and I went with the option of foam project board but now I am thinking maybe I should have opted for insulation board lol. and yes I did have the one piece of tape in the top right holding my thermostats probe cord. any suggestions on how to secure it otherwise? thanks for the responses guys it really helps me think more outside the box when I am able to bounce ideas off other more educated owners. my thermo is on the far left "cold side" against the side of the wall and my probe is under his hide on the hot side...not directly center of the heat mat but close and my thermostat probe is dead center of my heat mat.

A thermostat probe should be outside the tank between the glass and uth, not inside the tank.

The thermometer probe on the hotside should be under the substrate on the glass over the uth.

yes definitely I agree that my probe should be between glass and UTH, unfortunately the thermo I am using atm "it's probe is huge" literally this thing is the size of a thing of chapstick. unless I took the housing off I don't see how I could get it to fit there, the UTH wont make a seal around it.

You could also tape it to the bottom of the UTH instead of in between. As for securing wires and probes, hot glue works well.
