Have you noticed dimorphism in pits via the shape of the tail?
It's not 100%, but I've found it as accurate as popping - especially in mature animals that are harder to pop.
The males have a tail that visually looks longer because the taper is much more gradual. The taper on the female is much more abrupt. One of these days I will get off my rear end and snap some comparison pics so people can see what I'm referring to.
I would definately agree skiploader. The tail will tell alot in pits. Look at the asian rat snakes, it is even easier with them. The males have a very noticable bulge just under the vent of their himi's. Its a dead givaway.

I am glad that I have found another person out there who has learned to appreciate a shapely piece of tail.
