Haha thanks skip! It's an old nickname growing up, not much you can do with a last name of Lard.

Tell that to the fire babies I have now from a 400 gram male
Tell that to my yellowbelly het clown babies that came from a mom bred at 1200 grams.

The only undue stress is from ppl spreading undue rumors

    Back to the RAT thread...
Rats don't always breed immediately after being put together, sometimes it takes several heat cycles before the female will allow the male to breed her.
Larger males are more insistent when it comes to breeding and usually can get the job done faster, but not always.

One pairing I have the male and female are the same size, the other pair the female is a little larger. I finally saw a little action going on last night, hopefully the deed was done. I ordered best love songs by Marvin Gaye...this should work wonders.

    Re: No luck breeding

Give it a little time I could tell you the horror stories about my start to rat breeding but Ill spare you the long detailed version and cut it short.

I have a 1.3 colony took almost 2 months to get my first litters and they were pathetic. First mom had 4 and they all survived to feeder size. Second mom had 11 and none survived I do not think she was producing milk and we were out of town for the weekend. Third mom had 1 and well it didnt last the night. Now my second go around (at about 4 months) is going great I have more rats than I know what to do with I had 2 litters of 14 and 15 and they all made it to weanlings ATM. My third mom is absolutely huge and should pop anyday. So give it a little time and do not be to quick to feed them off if the first litter is small.

Maybe there was something wrong with her, and that's why she never had babies? I just got 16 out of a first time mom.
