    Quarantining?

How do you go about setting up a quarantine for a snake?

Don't need one, but if I ever do, want to be prepared.

Set up the snake simply, but adequately, in a room as far away from the rest of your snakes as possible.

Personally, for the first couple weeks I use paper towel so I can monitor bowel movements. After that, I begin using bedding and pretty much caring for them like I would normally, so that it's easier to maintain humidity and cleanliness and all that fun stuff. The only difference is that they are in a separate room, and I clean them after the rest of my snakes, to ensure that nothing gets passed from them to my current collection. Wash the bowls separately, etc.

I have never had a snake I brought home end up sick, but it's always better to be safe than sorry.

Set up a quarantine enclosure in a separate room. Have a whole set of separate equipment designated for quarantined animals. You don't want to cross contaminate tools and supplies. It defeats the purpose of quarantine.

When you feed a quarantined snake and it doesn't eat, don't put the feeder back in with the rest of the food sources you feed your healthy snakes. Keep is sealed or separate.

Personally I keep snakes in quarantine for a minimum of 6 months. Some illnesses can lay dormant for months before becoming active so you don't want to introduce your new snake to the rest of the collection too soon.

Overall, do all your cleaning routine for your resident animals first, then do quarantine last. You don't want to walk in quarantine then go to your other snakes.

Honestly, if I buy some snakes from a trusted breeeder, I'll only quarantine for a month to make sure there aren't any mites or obvious problems. If I pick some snakes up at ashow, I quarantine for 3 months

My quarantine is in my guest bedroom (no wonder I have no guest) which is at the opposite side of my Python room and at a different level.

Everything is setup like in the snake room the equipment used never leaves that room it contains everything I need.

What's important is to avoid cross contamination.

I work with my established snake first and once done the ones in QT, once I work with the one in QT I don't go back to my snake room.

Even the supply is clean in different areas using different sponged, detergent etc.

Each incoming animal gets the PAM treatment (Provent-a-mite) often not necessary I never had the displeasure to ever receive a snake with mites just an additional measure to ensure the safety of my animals.

Just a few things among other.

And it doesn't matter who the snake is from it's still get quarantined for 60 days minimum usually 90 days.

My ball room is in the finished basement. My quarantine room is on the second floor of the house. This puts an HVAC unit and a full floor between my collection and the quarantined snakes. In the quarantine room, there is a rack, thermostat, temp gun, scale, tongs, rat housing, etc. It is a complete separate reptile room with all the needed equipment. Nothing, including rats move from upstairs to the ball room and visa versa.
