If you're breeding for the first time, an incubator.

I'd rather be able to control the eggs environment. I find there are too many things that can go wrong in maternal incubation.

There's nothing wrong with maternal incubation. Many people have been successful. Maybe after I hatch out a few clutches I'd give it a go, but until then I'll be using an incubator.

Artificial incubation, if set up correctly, is safer. You can control the environment to your exact calibration.
You have less control over maternal incubation.

Either method is fine, but I would rather artificially incubate clutches to ensure the most success.

i think that being able to controll variables like heat and humidity should be a dead giveaway. i built a decent incubator for around 35 bucks so its not exactly a wallet breaker. even if u hatch out a clutch of normals u more than pay for the materials 1st clutch. i like being able to controll the variables and get higher hatch rates. altho some people have great hatch rates with maternal incubation too. i guess id just rather not chance it

I prefer maternal. It's the method I started with with my very first clutch in 2008 and what I'll continue going with unless I have a female that just decides not to brood. I have an incubator sitting in the corner of the room just in case, but - for me - maternal incubation is more rewarding.

What do you think about the Reptibator Incubator from Zoomed? I don't trust in making my own. I have only been a BP owner for about a year, so I am not breeding for awhile, I just want as much information as possible

If you use that incubator you would still need another thermostat IMO.

Check out some websites and see if you can find them premade. I'm in Canada and am goin to be getting mine from Greg West.

I just had my first year breeding and did the maternal route. 2 clutches at 12 eggs and all hatched out perfectly, including my first pied! I'm not saying I would never use an incubator but both my moms did great, one was even a first timer like me!
