Food Size
So, Monty is a little over 4 feet in length and he weighs 635 grams.
I got him a small adult rat for dinner. To me, it looks huge. Are we cool or should I go a step smaller?

Small rats would be a good size for him

How much does the rat weigh? Some people's idea's of a small rat is different from others. If it's between 64-95g rat it should be the right size.

Hmm... Dunno'. It's frozen, so I'll just have to get a scale. It was on my list of things to get anyway, so I guess this just makes a good excuse for me to go ahead and get one, eh?
I'm thinking the rat is the right size. You know, I talked to the guy at the exotic animal pet shop, etc. etc. It's just that I'm overly-cautious and over-read and under-trained. My untrained eyes think the rat is big. Monty probably just wants his freakin' dinner.

This is a website someone here gave me awhile back. It says a small rat is about 45-75g so it if weighs in that range you should be fine

Re: Food Size
If you don't have a scale yet, you can eyeball the girth of the rat compared to the girth of the thickest part of the snake - if they're roughly the same, go for it. If the rat's a lot fatter than Monty, might be too big.

4 foot and only 635g? That sounds extremely skinny for a ball python. That is more like the build of a corn snake than a ball python. Are you sure its 4ft and are you sure its 635g? I hope something is lost in translation here.
That said, at 635g your ball should be eating 63-95g rats every 5-7 days. This is what is considered an appropriate meal (10-15% of your snake's body weight), although they can easily take meals much larger than this (although it isn't recommended, much like we wouldn't recommend you eating an entire box of cookies or gorging yourself at the buffet everyday just because you can).
