Female deserts seem to be unable to lay viable eggs and have a high risk of becoming eggbound and dying as a result - but males breed fine.
It's just that it might be harder to sell the female desert hatchlings for any other purpose than pets.
But if you started with a female axanthic it is perfectly possible to make axanthic deserts using her sons.
