    People aren't Nice...

Is it just me, or does it feel like there is a lack of genuine people in the world today? Maybe it's because they're quiet and we just don't see them, whereas the people who tend to be negative tend to also be louder and more obnoxious.

While speaking on another forum recently, I made a simple passing comment about a topic. Nothing really serious. No facts, no information... Just a: "That's neat. Have you heard of _____?"

    That's it.

And it seems like a good portion of people on the internet nowadays just jump at every chance to either:

    a.) Correct you
b.) Correct you while looking better than you
c.) Maybe not correct you, but generally have their 'say in the matter'.

I am all for the fact that I am on the internet and people can say whatever they'd like. That's fantastic. Heck, I would feel repressed if I were to be told what I could and couldn't talk about on the internet. I understand that. But there are times that it's like: "Really? You really just had to say something? You contribute nothing to the conversation, other than trying to make other people 'wrong' and by showing off how 'right' you are."

Congratulations. I don't know everything. And I am happy to learn if you are willing to tell me what I'm wrong about. But in this case, the comment in question wasn't even anything serious. It was just advising someone to check out something interesting and worth a read. No merit. No "This is 100% correct". Just... This thread might be interesting. Not even herp related. No facts. Just general 'People interest' stuff.

I know you can't please everybody, but it feels like people are having to defend themselves so much more nowadays. No, you don't look better by being smarter than someone. You know what looks better than calling someone a moron for not knowing as much as you? Being willing to teach what you know to people you feel might not understand something. I mean, if you want to call me an idiot for something, at least show me how I could correct it. Instead, it feels like people are on various forums nowadays just to stroke their own egos.

Many of you aren't like that, and that's fantastic. I just feel irked that everybody is 'wrong' and someone else is 'right' and you are less of a person in their eyes because you aren't as good as them.

I'm a wicked good artist, but I don't walk around bragging about it at every chance. I don't go into art forums and say: "I have more experience than you, and more skill. Therefore you are wrong because you don't know."

Haha. This turned into a bit of a rant, but I feel like it's true.

Naturally I'm happy to bounce around the internet, visiting here and there, trying to ignore these people as best I can. It just seems like they're becoming more commonplace nowadays. And that's unfortunate. And, yes, it does bother me (moments like this where I'm just irked. Not really mad, just like: "Really?) Normally not so much, but what's with everyone jumping down everybody's throat to be 'right' nowadays?

Not everybody knows everything. But we're all learning, every day. So why do people hold that against other people for not having the same life experiences?

Now if you've been here a while you could easily take what's coming the wrong way, so let me just say that what I am about to say, I say in all earnestness.

Why worry about it? It accomplishes nothing. Unless your goal is to increase your stress levels and you really enjoy that frustrating feeling of not being able to do anything about whatever it is that is bothering your senses.

I'm not saying not to wonder why people are what they are or do what they do, that's infinitely fascinating, but actually giving it weight that has any bearing whatsoever in your real life, to me, is of no value. You know what you are, what you're not, what you'd like to be and what you're willing to do to get there. Why does a strangers opinion, someone who you will most likely never meet in person, matter at all?

Put your back to it and move on. Which is not saying to ignore it, there's always something, some reason or lesson, but you don't have to let it have a life beyond what it really is: a strangers opinion on the internet.
I may not be very smart, but what if I am?

I'm sorry you're feeling this way Danielle, it sucks! People come on the internet nowadays and think that just because they're not right in front of the other person's face that they can say absolutely whatever they want whenever they want. It's absolutely ridiculous and shouldn't happen but it does.
All I can say is don't let it get to you (easier said than done, I know). There has been plenty of times where someone has outright harassed me on a forum and so I just leave and don't go back to that site any more.
Ignore them because there are a lot of people out there that will bully people just to get a rise out of them and that gives them a thrill. :|

see this kind of made me think back to me telling the woman about her snakes not being what she thought they were but I know I was just trying to help and teach her about the mutations so she never got upset so yes I agree if people were just willing to teach and not boast things would be simpler and less stressful

That type of approach makes sense. Yes, we are all learning, so it's great you took the time to explain to her some of the mutations, rather than just call her out for not doing her research.

It normally doesn't bother me. As I'm sure you guys have seen, I don't come here and rant frequently. It was more the fact that I observed that these actions with others are increasing, and more wondering if other people are noticing an increase as well. It only affects me so long as I read the thread where these comments are. If I find it upsetting me, I leave, and forget about it from that point on.

I know I'm bringing it up here for discussion, but I try not to let it bother me day to day. Certainly not enough to leave me wondering about it when I log off, haha. But it's definitely something I'm sure other people have noticed as well.

wilomn: I'm definitely not taking that the wrong way, and I appreciate the response. It's just more the fact that, even though I can ignore these people for the most part and move on, there's still those initial moments where you are reading through a forum and someone's negativity shows up, disrupts the conversation with some innane comments, and you need to read past it. So for that brief moment, it does affect you. Not long term, but enough that your brain is like: "Why did that person post that?" You still have to address it, however brief. And I guess that's what irks me. It feels like those comments creep up a lot, and just serve no purpose. The same as my worrying about said comments serve no purpose, so perhaps it's a moot point.

Overall, I'm just finding these kind of 'jerk-ish' comments to be annoying. Like a mosquitto that's in your bedroom when you're trying to sleep. It's not directly bothering you. It's just irritating. And no matter how hard you try and ignore it to go to sleep, every now and then it buzzes by and you're like: "Again?! Come on."

Can't control other people. I get that. But there are days when they could tone down the bravado, haha.
