Cant say I know much about breeding worms, or even what they eat. But if all it takes is nutrient rich soil one would think that it may be less expensive to feed your rats as well. Heck youd have an entire food chain in your house at that point. Pretty cool.
Worms are pretty easy. We had a worm box that way we always had bait for fishing. We just put dirt in a bin made drain holes and most ended the dirt added worms then put a price of wet card board on top.
