    Tragedy strikes...

I don't have much time to type this because I'm already at work and taking a chance already because my boss is here. Last night the humidity spiked up, so I propped the top of the cage and put a small weight on it to escape proof it. Needless to say I was wrong, I found her on top of the cover, the top had closed on her lower body and she was just laying there, stuck. I freed her and there was an impress where the top was laying on her and there was a little blood. I'm sick just thinking about it, but I had to leave for work. She wasn't bleeding profusely or anything but she was cut nonetheless....

    what should I do?

I already feel like driving into a building so no need to guilt me, will definitely never try that again.

Take her to a vet as soon as possible. I had one try to escape got severely injured, burned etc. Completely my fault, after a long long recovery she is now over 1 kilo and will likely be ready to breed this coming season. But you need to take her to a vet, maybe x-rays and certainly will need antibiotics, you will have to keep the cage sterile clean. How high was the humidity? Having high humidity shouldnt be too big of a deal unless there is condensation forming. Good luck! Hope she will be ok.

Is there anyone who can check on her for you while you are at work? Did there appear to be anything broken? That would be my concern. I wish I had more advise for you but I will sure be prating for your girl and you. Keep us updated.

To go with that, is there anyone that can take her to the vet while you are at work. Or is it possible that you can leave work, or leave work early to goto the vet?

    Re: Tragedy strikes...

Just for future reference, humidity doesn't just mysteriously spike on its own. A sudden rise in humidity could have meant that she dumped her water bowl or urinated, which means her substrate needed changing rather than trying to creatively vent the tub.

Got out of work and took her to the vet. They will be treating her soon. Her spirits are high as usual and she was not bleeding when I picked her up from my house. Thanks for your opinions guys, I just need to get a PVC ASAP. It was dumb of me to even try that, never will again.

There is always a chance of a break or soft tissue damage in the failing they can get into when stuck. It is impossiable to say what is going on from my living room. No one can make any sort of diagonosos from a computer. We can only guess.

That said there is a good chance that it is nothing more than a scuff on the edge of the tub. Unless there is someone experienced whom can check on her there is little you can do now. When you get home very gently remove her and put her on a surface (freshly made bed) and watch her for what she does. If she behaves differently I'd go to the vet but if she is exploring with tongue flicks I might wait and keep a close eye on her keep the scrap clean and if I had some a dab of silver sulfizidine. Polysporin often will effect the scales and soften them so in something minor like you are describing I would not use it.

Keep a very close eye if there is any sign of anything out of the ordinary it is time for a vet. Personally I have a emergency animal fund and a great vet so I would likely get a check up and xrays anyway but that is likely to be 100$ (visit and xrays) and is likely unfounded if the animal is behaving normally.

For future reference, if you have good ventilation a spike in humidity is either pee or spill or the rooms humidity increased. I have a hygrometer in with all the snakes but also the room. If the RH is basically the same, room (give or take 5-8%) and enclosure, I don't worry, if it is higher in the tub, I correct the cause, and let it come down on its own, it will in a hour or so if there is enough ventilation.

Yeee, poor thing! Hopefully she'll be okay. :X I'd like to think BPs are...er..."squishier" than they look seeing as they can wiggle through some tiny holes, hopefully just being squashed for a little bit won't break any bones. My guy did something very similar in his old tank and just about gave me a heart-attack. I heard a banging in the middle of the night and walked over to his tank to find him 1/3rd out of the cage with his head hanging out, looking at me like "What?". There were cage clips on the screen, I still have no idea how he managed to wedge himself through the tiny tiny gap he made himself before he got stuck. I thought for sure he hurt himself, the clips were keeping the screen top down and there was considerable pressure on him. I put him back and observed him for a bit but he seemed completely unfazed and was moving around normally. This was months ago and he's totally fine, hopefully your girl will be as lucky!

...and now the little brat has eight cage clips locking down his lid. Try and get out of THAT! (No please, don't really...)

Just got off the phone with the Vet. Good news!! The doctor is not at all concerned with the laceration as it wasn't very deep. As for the X-ray: passed with flying colors! I'll have to bring her in for a shot of antibiotics but the vet said she was a "very good specimen" and had a good time crawling around in the Vet's!

Thanks for all your help guys! Learning new things every day...sometimes they cost $400, sometimes they don't..

Yeah they are really good escape artists, glad to hear he wasn't hurt. And thanks for your concern!!
