I feel like this applies here. Got this from the internet, i claim no rights to it.
"Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a high school about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept sets them up for failure in the real world.
Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it!
Rule 2: The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.
Rule 3: You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice president with a car phone until you earn both.
Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.
Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.
Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault; so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.
Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.
Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.
Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you "FIND YOURSELF". Do that on your own time.
Rule 10: Television and video games are NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.
Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one."
So many kids in my generation have zero work ethic and no concept of real life. Their eyes get big when i tell them how much i have to pay for cell phone amonth, car insurance, car repairs, etc. and are even more baffled as to how i pay for it. Um lets see, its called work, you all should try it sometime lol! (I know this doesnt apply to everyone but id say it applies to a VERY good majority o my generation haha). It drives me right up the wall!

It might be just me, but I don't see how this nugget will help a young man in middle school cope with the anxiety of going back to school. I think this may be useful in about 4 or 5 years, but just a little off the mark for this thread.

It wasnt meant just for Jason. The thread involved people in high school too and people started talking about what is and what isnt really important as far as school. I really like Bill's take on high school and life in general.
My ranting in the end probably was off the mark lol, but the rest of it was applicable to the thread i believe.

Let me tell you, I was a TERRIBLE student. I barely scraped by from the moment I entered middle school to the day I graduated high school. I couldn't motivate myself to work hard because I didn't see a point in it, and I figured I wasn't smart enough to do better. I ended up dropping out of college and boy, have I learned my lesson the hard way. Real life is hard and the people who want your bill money don't care what happened at home or who died or what sad story you tell, they want their payment and you dang well better have it or watch the late fees pile up. Honestly, I might still be in that same slacker state of mind if I hadn't gotten my snakes. It's been over 3 years since I stepped into a school building but I'm determined to go back to school and get my vet tech and zoology degree. I start school in September/October (since it's online classes).
That being said, treat these years as your best years. You only get to do them (properly) once, and you can have a lot of fun finding out what interests you and what you like. I was "that nerdy girl" all through public school (I didn't "blossom" until college, really) and I know that if you're not "popular" then it can seem rough. I developed a severe case of anxiety in high school, so I know how much you probably struggle with it. But have fun with your public school system experience. Take time to explore new things because right now you have that safety net of your parents to catch you if you slip up or things don't go the way you planned. You don't know how much you'll miss that until it's gone.
And DO YOUR HOMEWORK. It's stupidly ridiculous how big of a percentage of your grade your homework is. If you do all your homework and projects, even if you're a terrible test taker you'll pass.
Oh, and another word of advice, when you get a job, SAVE YOUR MONEY. That's one of my biggest regrets. All that money I wasted buying stupid things and partying... Sigh... It makes me cry.

I do appreciate everyones posts in this thread, and the first day wasn't bad, but my WV Studies teacher, is such a.....sorry, this is a family site and I'm 13...so....& my homeroom teacher acts like a 7 year old so this will be a very exciting fun filled year . I do think I will enjoy it once I get back in the roll of things, and Mike, your post with Bill Gates rules, helped a lot honestly. I've already been told things that have been downgrading, whoooooooooo! I honestly hope this year goes by fast and I go onto high school, hopefully online.

School is a great thing (: I skimped my way through a lot of it, and it bit me in the butt, i had to get my stuff together this last year, but now Im going to WSU! So as long as you got a goal and work for what you want to do, school should be a blast, specially if you got a ton of friends. Just dont let them distract you from getting to class on time (; im a senior this year, im pretty darn excited, youll love it when your an upperclassmen. Good luck!
