New guy with new BP
Hey guys,
I got my BP about 3 weeks ago. I've done a lot of reading on here and got his cage all set up, fed him twice, and he even shed. (1 piece)
I'm new to BPs or reptiles in general, completly fasinated by them... What they do, how they move and interact with their environment... Very neat!
Papa Clyde is a 6 month old normal who (I think) is pretty big for his age. I fed him a week after getting him, he ate a live mouse, then earlier this week (5 days) he ate a med size and a small one in a single sitting. I didn't think he'd take the second, but I guess he was hungry.
Anyhow, I try to hold him every other day or so for 5-10 mins, he's still kinda jumpy but I think he'll out grow it.
Here's Papa Clyde just before he shed:

Here's his crib:

Cage has an under tank heating pad, but it's not plugged in. Clyde lives in the garage and it's been averaging 89* +- 3* in his cage all the time. I have a lamp w/ceramic heater that I'll set up on top as soon as it gets too cool. I do not have a thermostat though, which is next on the list.
I use cypress substrate to help keep the humidity up, I have plastic covering 2/3rd of his tank right now.
I'm useing a "Zilla" unit with 2 probes to measure temp and humidity.

A constant 89 temp might be to warm for him.

Re: New guy with new BP
I agree it's not optimal, and will be rectified as soon as possible, but till then, he eats when offered food and sheds in 1 piece.
This SoCal heat wave is sposed to break today.
I don't want to buy 3-4 therms to find the right one, so I'm reading. I'm thinking about the VE200? Seems like people like them...

The VE-200 is a good thermostat that many people like. Personally I prefer the Herpstat line of thermostats ( but either will do a great job)

I wouldn't consider him big for his age by any means. I have some 9 month old balls that are easily 3 times his size judging from your pic. He appears to be a little thin as well. He really should be on appropriate sized rats at his size. Small-medium mice are far too small for him. At the least he should be eating large adult mice.
Other than that, I'll second what the others have said about your temps and getting a decent thermostat. Whether you go for the VE200, Herpstat, Helix or similar you will be happy. They are all great thermostats.

Re: New guy with new BP
Ahh, ok, I don't have much to compare him with, other than picture on here... He's a little bit fatter now.
I'm was having a hard time finding rats the right size, but just found a place 30 mins away... (which is why I fed him 2 mice last week)
I do need to get down to wallmart and get a scale, I think that would help.
A thermostat is next on the list, Still doing research on them, but will prob order one later today.
Thanks for your (and the others) input, much appreciated.
