    whats the deal?

So, ive had my bp for nearly a year. He was an adult when I got him, and he's about 6or so years old. Always been really great, no problems, and no tempermant problems....until recently. It started a few weeks ago. Temps stay at 80 and humidity between 40%-60%. He started acting very weird, like not hiding, rubbing on ceiling of enclosure, and basically roaming. I thought he might be hungry, even though he just got fed, so I gave him another rat. He ate no problem. I've tried handling him to see if that might help, but he acts weird then, too. He wanders and is very restless when I handle him. I just opened the front of the enclosure up, he wasn't in any defensive positin, no ready coil, so I thought nothing of him, at that point, as I was just checking his water. I set my hand down in the cage and he bit me. No coil or wrap it hanging on, just quick and let go. But I was very surprised, as he has never bit anybody before. Nothing in his environment has changed, other than his light. His old one burnt out (ive changed his light before) and that was about when it started. It just exploded, thankfully I had him out at the time. I just replaced it, and hope that gets things back to normal. Other than that, nothing has changed. Any insight, here on this???

    Re: whats the deal?

Small/medium rats, same thing he's always eaten, it is what he ate before I even had him.
36*15*14 enclosure (custom cage that came with him, so odd dimensions) an old tub turned upside down with coco husk chunks glued on, I made it, and he has used it fine with no problems for about 8 months. He then has a tupperware container as a water bowl, the same one he came with and I use asoen shavings for bedding. It's the setup he had when I got him, except his old hide was too small, so I replaced it with the current one. He had repticarpet, but it was hard to clean, so I switched. These are the conditions he's been in sjnce i got him and he has always been fine. Stable temps never go more then 2-3 degrees from 80. Humidity is about 60 after I spray then goes down to about 40 and then I spray again. I can go about 8 hours without spraying.

Make sure to feed him something slightly wider than the widest part of his body.

The only thing i can see is you need a temp gradient. One side 88-90 and the other about 82.

    How much does he weigh?

    Re: whats the deal?

Ive honestly got no idea about his weight. He is 47 inches and hasn't loss weight since I've had him. No ribs showing, nice and healthy. I don't have a scale to weigh him with.

He should have a hot side that is 90. Maybe he's looking for heat?

Have you been checking you temps recently? Thermostats can fail same for thermometers I would suggest a gradient too and breaking out a new thermometer to check the old one. It sounds like temps to me just a guess but...

Did you check for snake mites?
