Freedom Breeder Rack Temps?

Hello,

I have a question about my new rack Temps. I have the Freedom Breeder Racks with 0% top opening. They are going in my home where the temp in the room is 72 degrees. That is kinda cold (my wife love a cold house).

Anyway, I set the probe for the flexwatt heat strip to 105 degrees. The cold side of the bin is running about 80-82 degrees and the warm spot in the bin is about 86 on top of the aspen shavings and 96-100 on the bare plastic under the shavings on the hot side. Does that sound about right or does the cold side need to be warmer?

How hot is your actual flexwatt? I wouldn't feel comfortable running flexwatt that exceeds 105 degrees. It's not really meant to go hotter than that.

The cold side sounds fine. Your hot side should be measured at the bottom of the tub under the substrate. It shouldn't exceed 95 degrees. That way if your snakes decide to burrow down, they won't burn themselves.

If you can't heat the house, can you heat the room the rack is in? I recommend a stand alone heater in your snake room. 72 is a little low. 75 would be the lowest room temp I keep snakes in.

Less shavings

I just took a ton of shaving out which I think will work a lot better. I will try to keep the room temp at least 75 or greater. Too bad I do not have a dedicated snake room. I have the panels set at 102 which makes the plastic inside by temp gun reading at 98-95 degrees. The ambient on the cold side did not change much at 82 degrees.

Keep bringing it down until the plastic is no greater than 95. The snake will snuggle into the substrate if it is seeking warmer temps. Most of the time with wood substrate when you pop the tub open you realize the snakes curl up and push all of the shavings out of the way and sit right on the plastic anyway.
