DSLRs can get very expensive. My advice to you is start with a crossover camera. Its more than a point and shoot but less than a DSLR, both in price and functionality. A DSLR for dummies type book may be beneficial as well. There are some really nice point and shoots that do almost the same stuff as DSLRs now adays. I would suggest going in to a local camera sales place and playing with their cameras for quite a while, to see what you enjoy the most. Good luck!
